General Interest: Spelling it like it isn't

Embaressed by yor speling? Never mind.
Fed up with his students' complete inability to spell common English correctly, a British academic has suggested it may be time to accept "variant spellings" as legitimate.
Rather than grammarians getting in a huff about "argument" being spelled "arguement" or "opportunity" as "opertunity," why not accept anything that's phonetically (fonetickly?) correct as long as it can be understood?
"Teaching a large first-year course at a British university, I am fed up with correcting my students' atrocious spelling," Ken Smith, a criminology lecturer at Bucks New University, wrote in the Times Higher Education Supplement.

I have to agree with the note, use a dictionary, rather than be lazy (spell check only works if you somewhat know how to spell the word in the first place). However, it's not that simple with some people. My husband can't spell, so he spells things phoentically. It's sometime difficult to read his writing, but I get through. Schools need to take illiteracy more seriously, and try harder to provide assistance where needed. As the case with my husband. They just passed him off hoping the next grade would help him, but no, they passed him off too. Now look at his situation. Teachers need to step up and be teachers, and not accept atrocious spelling, nor "text-talk".
